The power of Transformation and Magic
"How should we be able to forget those ancient myths that are at the beginning of all peoples, the myths about dragons that at the last moment turn into princesses; perhaps all the dragons of our lives are princesses who are only waiting to see us once beautiful and brave. Perhaps everything terrible is in its deepest being something helpless that wants help from us."
—Rainer Maria Rilke, Letters to a Young Poet
“And when all that was left was ashes, she would again clothe herself in flame. Rising from the dust of her past to rekindle the spark of her future. She was a Phoenix, her own salvation; rebirthed, renewed, resurrected.” — LaRhonda Toreson
"When the dragon soars and the phoenix dances, the people will enjoy happiness for years, bringing peace and tranquility to all under heaven.” —Chinese saying
The Spirit Animal symbolism of Dragon is that of mastery of the elements and primordial power. The medicine they bring is one of transformation, courage and wisdom. As the guardians of ancient treasures they carry with them great abundance and mystery. They provide fierce and loyal protection and bring a hefty dose of magic to what you have come to express in the world.
Phoenix is a mythical bird that is considered to be a most exotic and beautiful feminine emanation. She is a fire spirit symbolizing rebirth, transcendence, renewal and transformation. With colorful plumage and a tail of gold and scarlet, the phoenix has a 500 to 1000 year life-cycle. When she is at the end of her present life-cycle, she builds herself a nest of myrrh that then ignites; both nest and bird burst into flames and are reduced to ashes, from which a new, young phoenix arises, reborn anew to live again. The Phoenix is believed by the Chinese to be sent to earth to perform extraordinary works and to aid in the development of humankind, sometimes taking a human form. She appears in different stages of the world's progress, and then returns to heaven.
In China— pictured together or apart— the dragon and the phoenix are traditional symbols of auspiciousness. Much like the yin yang symbol, pictured in unison they combine to create the perfect balance of inner and outer, masculine and feminine, fire and water. They are a symbol of prosperity and royal abundance, of magic and the fruitful marriage of opposites.
